SUNDAY POST – “Empty Philosophies & High-Sounding Nonsense”
8 Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers[a] of this world, rather than from Christ.9 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.[b]10 So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.
Colossians 2:8-10
We are surrounded by empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense like never before in our nation’s history. Having just finished James Lindsay’s book “Cynical Theories,” I am more keenly aware of how nonsensical the left’s agendas are. They are constantly turning on each other, deciding that a certain class in their caste system of oppression is suddenly not oppressed enough and no longer deserving of their special consideration.
Do you recall last summer when Boston Pride, one of the cornerstones of the gay rights movement, having its first parade in 1971, abruptly dissolved itself in the face of BLM because it “did not have enough diversity?” Whatever your thoughts on gay rights, Boston Pride successfully advanced those rights over the last 50 years. But now, a white gay individual is not diverse enough anymore. Not diverse enough to matter to the ravenous woke machine, which quickly chewed them up and spit them out. Never mind what they did over the last 50+ years.
This movement is ravenous and cannibalistic, and after it devours our Judeo-Christian values and our children, it often also eats its own. It must be hell to be trapped inside it, never knowing when your oppression might be redefined as privilege and suddenly, you’re a target for devourment. There are so many examples of this.
Does this sound like “empty philosophy?”
In Critical Disability Theory, a deaf person would be shamed for wanting cochlear implants to cure their deafness. A blind person would be accused of turning their back on their “blind identity” if they sought a surgery to cure their blindness. Do these philosophies actually benefit the blind and the deaf? Under Critical Fat Theory, an obese person should embrace their obesity, and all the health risks that go along with it, and should not want to lose the weight, lest they participate in “oppressing fat people.”
Does this sound like “high-sounding nonsense?”
When you read about all of the circular, nebulous, self-contradicting, but high-sounding nonsense… it is all empty philosophy. Philosophy was recently summed up by a friend as “the attempt to understand the world without God.” That is the most succinct and accurate way I have ever heard it defined.
So while we fight against this nonsense, I also sympathize for those caught in this machine. It must be a very dark, hopeless place. However, “in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.” Contrast the emptiness of these hollow philosophies with the fullness of God in us.
Have gratitude…a degree of empathy, and…
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
