The WCS School Board Policy Committee met on Monday, February 6th at 6pm. The meeting lasted 90 minutes and the bulk of the discussion was around policy 1.703 which is the zoning policy. The members went back and forth with many different scenarios about grandfathering of open zone request, etc but in the end, nothing to note out of this meeting.
The WCS School Board Work Session will take place on Thursday, February 16th at 6pm. To watch the livestream, follow this link: Live Stream
Items to note on the February Board Agenda:
We have asked many times for the board and administration to be transparent, yet they continue to place items in the consent agenda to try and push them through without any discussion. There are four items in the consent agenda that should be discussed:
- Items 2.d is the request to approve the ePlan Title III Immigrant Grant
To qualify for this grant, WCS must have at least 100 identified immigrant students which must be an increase from the prior two years average. - Item 2.e is request to approve the ePlan’s Resilient Communities Grant which is still related to COVID funds from the federal government.
This grant must go toward trauma-informed practices such as Family belonging, engagement and attachment, school belonging, engagement and attachment, emotion identification, regulation and expression. - Item 2.f is a request to approve ESSER 3.0 public funds remaining from last year. Again, related to COVID funds from the federal government.
- Item 2.g is the request to approve the Safe Return to In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services Plan which is an annual requirement of taking the COVID funds.
In New Business, we will get an update on the Math textbook adoption process along with a very long list of budget transfers, moving money from one category to another. Hopefully each of these will be explained in detail. One of the transfers is over $1M related to another federal USDA grant for supply chain. Always have to ask what strings are attached and this isn’t clear.
Finally, there are two separate requests for books to be removed due to sexually explicit material. The first request covers Speak, Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Field Guide to the North American Teenager, and Where the Crawdads Sing. The review committee states that “Without having clear guidance on how to determine the “level” of objectionable content or age appropriateness that would dictate the removal of a book from the library per State law”, the committee recommends that the books remain in the library and on assigned reading lists.
The second request is for the book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. The committee also recommended that this book remain in the library.
If you are concerned about any of these items, please show up to the work session or the board meeting.
